A Detacher
This Year the A Detacher show was inspired by Paris in the 30’s and particularly Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer. We had tossed around a few different ideas for music, ranging from music of the time period to contemporary electronic music. In the end Mona came up with this idea to use one song for the whole show, and to play multiple cover versions of it. In keeping with the spirit of Henry Miller, the concept was a metaphor for sex, in that it’s always different, yet always the same. I loved the idea and I think the music came out really cool. The show ended up only being 10 minutes long, so I had to edit down the music to fit, but here is the unedited “directors cut” version.
Behnaz Sarafpour
For Behnaz’s show we chose to use selections from the new Animal Collective record and the new School of Seven Bells album. Her collection this season was inspired by the sculptures of Alexander Calder. The music really complimented the collection in that both bands we used are on the surface very “pretty”, but the music is actually constructed from very complex rhythms and sounds. Check out this video clip for an example.

Mara Hoffman
Mara’s music is always a lot fun to work on. I first started working with Mara about five years ago. She always has real strong vision and narrative for each season, so her soundtracks tend to take on more of a cinematic feel. [you can here the music from her last 4 season in my fashion show archives section] This season Mara’s friend Ben Sharony made a track specifically for her show. His is the last song in the mix, so Mara and I built up a cosmic odyssey culminating in Ben’s track. Check out Mara’s Blog she’s got a lot of great artwork, and stuff on it; and check out this video of the show.
Nicholas K.
Nicholas K’s line had this Mad Max, kind of post apocalypse feel to it, and they wanted the music to be equally hardcore. We ended up using a bunch of dark electro punk, ranging from some classics to some new stuff. The music complemented the clothing nicely, and was probably the only time in my life I didn’t mind hearing Justice at 11am on Sunday.
Venexiana
Venexiana was at 9pm on Friday night. Day one. So as per usual with Kati Stern’s Venexiana line, the music was non stop bangers. Ranging from club jams to hard rock to old school punk. Her shows tend to be longer than most other designers that I work with, so the music ends up being more like a short DJ set, then a 10 minute soundtrack.

Friday the 13th
February 13th, 2009
This is an edit I did a couple years ago of a prog jam from 1975. This band was actually the last band Keith Relf from the Yardbirds was in before he died from an electrical shock. The edit didn’t really go over well at the time I made it. I played it at Mr. Black and I think cleared the whole club, I think it may have cleared the whole bar at Passerby also….. oh well….. Anyway I was going through some stuff and found it the other day. It sounds pretty good not having heard it in a while, sometimes I get a little wacky with the delay…. It seems kind of fitting for a Friday the 13th.

Happy New Year!
This is a re-working I did of Teddy P’s version of Fred Neil’s often covered classic “Everybody’s Talkin”. It’s a late night stone groove. I did this a while ago, but it’s still kind of a work in progress. It seemed like a good choice to post for a new years jam. Hopefully we will all get to where we need to be in 2009.

Christmas Leftovers
December 30th, 2008
For Christmas this year, I made a mix CD. The whole mix isn’t going up online, but I am putting up two of the tracks I remixed for the CD as a little post Christmas leftovers. The first is a remix of “Do they Know It’s Christmas”, and the second is a remix of a 1958 holiday novelty tune. Enjoy!
